The grandniece of Gertrude Tompkins, Laura
Whittall-Scherfee, beams with pride upon receiving the Congressional Gold
Medal on behalf of her family.
"The Congressional Gold Medal I received in
Washington DC last Wednesday on Gertrude's behalf. It was an
incredibly moving experience, especially the Remembrance Service that was
held on Tuesday, specifically for the 38 who died in service to their
country. Gertrude's name was read aloud with the other 37 and then 9
of us placed 38 roses on an acrylic pedestal after the memorial wreath was
presented. The missing man formation over the US Air Force Memorial
was spectacular."
