Aircraft Wrecks in the Mountains and Deserts of the American West

SBW-4E
6/19/45

On 11/28/08 Joel Bishop located part of the wreckage of a Canadian Car & Foundry built Curtiss Helldiver in Goose Lake in Modoc County California. Joel had researched this and other military losses in the area, and thanks to a receding water level he was able to locate part of the starboard wing, including part of the landing gear and dive brakes.

This particular aircraft is SBW-4E Bu No 21710 assigned to VB-5 that crashed on 6/19/45 while on a training flight from Klamath Falls, Ore. Sadly, both crewmen were killed during dive bombing practice at the lake.
